MCMXC a.D. - "The Limited Edition" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the album plus four extra remixes, and the songs in three parts which were originally all one track are divided into seperate tracks for each part (Principles of Lust and Back to the Rivers of Belief). This is pretty convenient if you didn't happen to like one part of the song and would rather skip it, but I personally like all parts on those two songs. I highly recommend this disc because of the remixes. The singles are sadly out of print, and in this way I got to listen to some of the wonderful remixes Enigma have done. The disc has not been released in the U.S. but is available as an import. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Voice of Enigma At first I disliked this song, as I felt the spoken words detracted from the musical experience and engaged my mental processes rather than my aesthetic receptors. In other words, the Voice of Enigma distracted me from the Feel and the Sound of Enigma. But I've come to realize that this song more than any other really segues from the normal thinking processes of the day - and like a meditation tape, takes you to a relaxed state to prepare you for an experience. Starting right into Principles of Lust would be too abrupt and dramatic for the senses and full appreciation of the music couldn't be attained without this intro. Around the vocals, the sweeping themes and soft instruments are beautiful. The end establishes the gothic mood with Gregorian voices, leading into... Principles of Lust: Sadeness Sadeness (minor key of course) begins with a strong beat and Gregorian voices, quickly establishing a mood as The EYES of Truth does for The CROSS of Changes. The flute begins with a beautiful haunting melody. Sandra sings French in a whispered voice with breathtaking pauses for those immortal four notes which make this song one of my four favorites. The Gregorian theme is reprised and a darker voice sings in French, more unsettling than Sandra's. The music pauses for her breathing, then the flute picks up again. She again speaks sade dit moi / sade donnes moi, drawing the flute, beat, and Gregorian voices together. Principles of Lust: Find Love An eerie crying instrument fades out of the Gregorian voices and begins Find Love. Sandra's breathing from Sadeness is sustained here, drifting from left to right beneath a swirling melody. A new beat kicks in with an odd trumpet-like sound and thrumming in the background. Sandra sings softly eerie words not unlike the tone of I Love You... I'll Kill You. Our now familiar undertone of Gregorian voices cuts in again. The beat stops and cuts back in, accompanied by Sandra's breathing. She sings the verse again and abruptly the beat stops. Unobtrusive synthesizers swirl under Sandra's breathing, admittedly sensual and evoking under a heartbeat pulse. Again our Gregorian friends, but... backward? Principles of Lust: Sadeness Reprise The first beat reprises in Sadeness Reprise. The flute is replaced by a piano playing a similar melody, followed by the familiar four notes. Now the flute returns, followed by Sandra and the Gregorian voices in the correct direction. The theme is played over a few times and fades out. Callas Went Away Very minor key. The song begins with birds, crickets, and a stream. A sad tone begins the song and a voice like a child's cry fades up. We a horse on cobblestones effect but the sound is cut off as the slow beat begins. A beautiful, beautiful melancholic piano plays slowly over the beat and ends. The child's voice returns, slightly louder. A single drum replaces the beat and the nature sounds. Plucked strings and Sandra's voice begin with the restoration of the beat. Sandra sings four lines in a low, whispered voice. The beat is again replaced by one drum briefly as a woman sings opera, restored with the child's cry. The piano is reprised softly, playing the part of the strings. The woman sings opera again and the horse returns. As the song fades out we hear two people speaking but their voices are unclear. The horses lead to rain and a bell tolling, which begins... Mea Culpa ...another minor key song. A thunderstorm and Gregorian voices accompanied by battle-march drums begin the song. The main beat kicks in, joined by Sadeness's flute and Sandra singing in French. An unfamiliar deep male voice makes a cameo, speaking 'the time has come' twice. The idea of this song is captured excellently in the warring between the holy Gregorian voices and the passion themes (breathing in the background, heavy beat, Sandra's voice). The voices are louder here than in other songs as if the church is condemning this tormented speaker. The beat pauses, replaced by Find Love's heartbeat for a few lines, then returns accompanied by the Gregorian voices. Sandra sings the last verse and the beat gives way to the battle-march drum, voices, and rain. A bell tolls and fades out. An odd sweeping instrument fades up and into... The Voice and the Snake ...my least favorite Enigma song. There are several reasons I do not like this song. The people speaking sound posessed, the music is so discordant and cheesy like a science fiction 'B' movie I cringe, and the subject goes against my belief whatever god or entity created us does not hate us. Knocking on Forbidden Doors This song opens with an instument wavering from left to right and a sad tone. A strong beat kicks in and the flute I've come to adore joins it. Sandra's voice whispers something in the background. Gregorian voices join her. The beat pauses for more stereo effects and returns. I love this song. It leads naturally from Mea Culpa into Back to the Rivers of Belief and fits with my favorites-a minor key, strong beat, beautiful instruments, and Sandra. I could not ask for a better transition from the intense minor-key trio into the lighter ending. Back to the Rivers of Belief: Way to Eternity A familiar set of five notes run through Way to Eternity on an instrument something like a music box - the same five used in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A stream runs in the background and Gregorian voices chant lowly - now including women as well as men. This song is in a major key. Back to the Rivers of Belief: Hallelujah A stronger beat begins the minor-key Hallelujah. Sandra's voice is sampled from The Voice of Enigma and replayed here with an eerie echo. Gregorian voices cut in, sounding a little like the vocal effects on The CROSS of Changes. Bell instruments play under the voices. Back to the Rivers of Belief: The Rivers of Belief An instrument swirls up into a major key, beginning The Rivers of Belief. Michael sings a beautiful song over a beat reminiscient of Return to Innocence - the same writer collaborated with Michael here. The song pauses for a dischordant piece like The Voice and the Snake which fortunately does not shatter the mood of the song. Michael sings again and the song fades with a 'falling star' instrument like the one used in Return to Innocence. The familiar tones from Second Chapter and The Voice of Enigma are reprised... Sadeness (Meditation Mix) This track begins with backward Gregorian chants like the end of Find Love and interesting percussion, more earthy and pagan. The flute returns playing its familiar themes. Finally the vocals begin in the last minute of the song. The main instriments pause for a brief drum solo, Sandra breathes "Sade" and her breathing draws the short piece to an end. Mea Culpa (Fading Shades Mix) This begins with one of the vocal samples used in Hallelujah and breathing. Both fade out as the opening part to Callas Went Away and Gregorian voices from Hallelujah join the crying instrument from Find Love and the swirling background instrument from Hallelujah. The voice ends into a heavy drum beat from The Rivers of Belief which fades up and becomes the beat from Hallelujah. Other themes from Hallelujah are continued, and the vocals to Mea Culpa begin. The two songs are fused so well it's amazing. More vocal effects from Hallelujah, then the chorus. Drums from the Meditation Mix of Sadeness are introduced and paired with Gregorian voices from Hallelujah. An instrument soars up as if to lead into The Rivers of Belief but instead just leads into the flute part from that song and reprises of lines from Mea Culpa. Find Love intoduces its own themes, the crying instument and heavy voices. Mea Culpa picks up again, the underlying beat still intact. The Rivers of Belief adds more flute themes under the chorus. Final vocal samples from Hallelujah and Mea Culpa end the song. Principles of Lust (Everlasting Lust Mix) This track is actually a remix of Find Love, not the entire Principles trilogy. The track explores the same themes as Find Love, but in a more intense way. Swirling background from Hallelujah opens the song, along with the last line of the song. An Indian instument has a brief cameo along with a stereo sweeping instrument that leads into instruments from Find Love and heavy breathing. A vocal clip from The Voice of Enigma not used in Hallelujah shows up here. Then a heavier, intense beat borrowed in part from Sadeness and themes of Find Love kicks in. More breathing blows through the song, and more of Sadeness's flute. The beat calms a little for a recitation of the lyrics to Find Love, then comes back full strength. A strange synthetic bang used in Find Love is even more intense here, with flute, breathing, and Gregorian voices. The beat pauses for more synthetic sounds, more breathing, and another clip from The Voice of Engima not used in Hallelujah. Some of the drums return and the breathing gets louder. More bangs, obviously building tension until the beat pauses in one of Enigma's heart-stopping experiences. The drums kick in, even more intense, with a new flute theme. Find Love is recited again. The instruments fade out with more bangs. The Rivers of Belief (The Returning Silence) The song opens with a distant organ playing an old, familiar gothic theme, one associated with forbidding castles on a stormy night. Fans of Fantasia or classical music recognize it instantly as A Night on Black Mountain. A crack of thunder completes the theme. Callas Went Away kicks in with its dark themes, but the instrument from the beginning of the disc adds a lighter feel. Callas's piano plays a brighter theme. The child's cry echoes, then Hallelujah's beat kicks in. More effects from Hallelujah are borrowed, then the instument used both to open and close the disc in The Voice of Enigma and The Rivers of Belief. Sandra recites an extremely pessimistic and paranoid quote from Father X, an executioner at Notre Dame. Then more effects from Callas kick in, and a voice clip from The Rivers of Belief. The beat fades up and suddenly Enigma's immortal flute returns, playing a new and beautiful version of The Rivers of Belief. Michael sings the lyrics, echoed in places by the flute. The song fades out in its familiar way, with instruments from The Voice of Enigma.

wow!!!!!!!!so u like the musique of Enigma?wow!!!!!!how can i describe my feelings now!for a long time,i thought that i was the only one who was interested in the musique of Enigma in our college, and the people around had no passion on such kinda musique.i remembered the first time that i contacted Enigma,on that day i went to a video & audio shopping center, when i was selecting some CDs,a man beside asked the shop assistant what kinda musique of Enigma is like, the shop assistant told him that it is like some kinda light musique.so it attracted my attention from then on and i bought his album named MCMXC a.D.after i returned home,i put it into my CD player and listened to the musique of Enigma carefully.it had a very strange musique style and its musique style is far from what i had listened ever before.i considered its musique style to be very holly and mysterious.however, that was the way i liked it.i started to collect the albums that Enigma had released and by now i have collected 5 albums:MCMXC a.D.The Cross Of Changes.Le Roi Est Mort,VIVE Le Roi!.The Screen Behind The Mirror.Love Sensuality Devotion--The Greatest Hits.so i got Enigma as a nickname on net.among all songs of Enigma,i regarded return to innocence to be the best.not noly the melody was very wonderful but also the lyrics were very encouraging.i had got a DVD edition of Engima either.it was so cool.i didn't catch the meaning that Enigma had expressed in most of his episodes, but it didn't affect me to appreciate the video chapter.
