In differential geometry, there are many interesting questions that are motivated by Einstein's theory of general relativity. One such a question is known as the quasi-local mass problem. Briefly speaking, this question asks for a quanity that could measure the gravitational energy associated to a bounded region in a space time. Mathematically, given a compact manifold with a nonempty boundary, one is interested in studying the boundary behavior of the manifold assuming its scalar curvature is bounded from below. In this talk, we will give a succinct introduction to this problem with an aim to bring some front-edge research study to the attention of a genera audience.
